Arizona State Legislature will begin a Special Session

The Arizona State Legislature will begin a Special Session on Monday, February lst to address the State's Budget shortfall.  There are two legislative measures being put forth for a special election in May we need your support.

The first is the Governor's 1% sales tax and the other is a Proposition 105 Reform measure.  The 1% sales tax is just that, a one cent additional tax on purchases.  The Proposition 105 Reform measure will allow the Legislature to withhold money from voter initiative programs and other voter mandated programs during economic periods when the State's budget exceeds the State's revenues by more than 10%.  (A condition we are currently experiencing)

When Proposition 105 was passed several years ago, it required all voter initiatives and mandates to be fully funded.  Unfortunately over the years more and more voter initiatives have been enacted and now 60% of the State's budget are mandated programs.  With the State's revenues falling, we can no longer afford to continue to spend money on programs at the cost of  public safety cuts in corrections, police and fire agencies.

Go to the Arizona State Legislative web at:  www.azleg.gov and contact your State Representative and Senator and tell them to support the 1% sales tax and Proposition 105 Reform measure.

You can no longer sit back and think someone else can take care of this for you.  Send the email today.  It is your job and those of your fellow correctional staff that are at stake, as well as the safey of the public.
